Movies Based on Writers

Any movie enthusiasts in the house?

Ever since I read Blake Snyder's Save the Cat, I have never looked at a movie the same way again. For those of you who are not familiar with Save the Cat and Blake Snyder, Blake was an amazing writing mentor in the film industry, for both novelists and screen writers.

He died unexpectedly on August 4th, 2009 but I can tell you one thing. His spirit definitely lives on. Such a genuine and beautiful soul. You can learn more about him and STC HERE and HERE

So today let's talk a little bit about movies. What do screenwriters and novelists have in common? Anybody know?

Yep. You got it. Screenwriters and novelists have one thing in common. They both strive to share an incredible story. That and most of their letters on their keyboard are worn off.

Anyways, I've recently rented a flick named LIMITLESS. Catchy title huh? It's about a writer who discovers a secret drug that allows him to have extraordinary powers. He's able to write a complete novel in a matter of days and that's just the beginning.

I'm a nut for movies based on writers. My absolute favorite is FINDING FORRESTER. If you're a writer, you HAVE to watch it. It's very inspiring and one of my favorite all-time quotes is by Forrester himself (paraphrasing here) when he brings an underprivileged kid under his wing:

You're first draft you must think with your heart. You're second draft, think with your head.

Meaning, spill your words first, then edit and revise. Words from the wise. Excellent film!

Don't you just love a great movie?

For your entertaining pleasure I've compiled a few trailers especially for you. Previews of movies that feature writers. So go and pop some popcorn, grab a box of Sugar Babies or Junior Mints (I vote for Gummy Bears), crank up the volume, and sit back and enjoy.

Question: How about you? Any favorite movies? Any based on writers?

FINDING FORRESTER
Find your Passion. Find your courage.

Great post. I love movies and my family quotes them alot. never thought to actually watch a movie about a writer. Have to find - Finding Forrester and watch it,
But i agree with you - his quote is great.
Maybe that's why we have such a hard time with edits and revisions - we wrote with our hearts and changing those words hurts so much

I've seen classes offered lately on learning how to become a screenwriter. Or...how to turn your novel into a movie. It's all I can do to learn to write, so I haven't ventured down that trail. But after learning more about this craft, I've never looked at a book or movie the same.

GREAT POST!

Great post, Mart. My All-Time Favorite Movie about and author is Romancing The Stone. But I do love Finding Forrester.

I absolutely agree with Casea about Romancing the Stone. I want to be Joan Wilder!

I also love Stand By Me as an author's movie--the young kid goes from telling his stories to becoming a writer. And no one mentioned The Shining! Here's Johnny! Stephen King writes about writers a lot. I wonder why? LOL

Fabulous post, Mart. :)

Ambrielle- Yay! Glad you're putting FF on your list

Daryl-Yes you will have to find FF. My family quotes movies a lot too! And yes, sometimes it's hard to kill our darlings so to speak (deleting words).

Sheri-yep lots of talk about movies and novels. I heard though that it is quite different. A different way of writing.

Casea- I will have to check out Romancing the Stone!

Jenna- Stand By Me what a classic. I'm going to have to watch that one again! And that's right The Shining!

D'Ann-Yay another Finding Forrester fan.

Brenda—YES you do 

Thank you ALL for stopping by!

Thanks for sharing.

I love The Proposal. I can't think of the title, but there's a movie with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keeton, Something's Gotta Give. It's not necessarily appropriate, but her writing life is a big part of the movie.

Thank Karen for stopping by!
Jackie- I am going to have to watch that movie. I can't remember if I saw it but I very much remember hearing about it. I love any movie that has to do with writing.

I have been meaning to read Save the Cat for the LONGEST time. I really need to get on that!

I've also meant to watch Gentlemen Broncos. It's a movie about fantasy writers, and from what I remember of the previews, looked hilarious.

I loved LIMITLESS and THE PROPOSAL. I also liked THROW MAMA FROM THE TRAIN and FINDING FORRESTER. What was the one with Will Ferrell?
